Living systems obey the same physical and chemical laws as non-living systems. However, a property of living systems is the degree of complexity: living systems comprise multiple levels of organisation and highly multi variate and non-linear structure at each level.  

The aim of this course is to give an introduction on the characteristics of this structure. Apart from descriptions at the genome level, we will report on current initiatives towards a complete description of life functions at the protein-level and organ-level.
