It is also possible to complete a PhD thesis at the University of Amsterdam at one of the departments involved in BioMedical Physics. In general a PhD is obtained after a 4 year research project containing about 4 months of coursework varying from courses in writing research papers, advanced bio-statistics and research ethics.

The last year of the Master program is mainly devoted to a research project. If the project goes well it can give a good start for the PhD. project. Since the research part of the PhD thesis is the main core of the requirements for the degree, a well performed Master thesis can give one a head start in the PhD program.

In general the PhD student is paid by funds outside of the university and are obtained by grants. Staff of the different departments wil apply for these grants but there are also possibilities that students apply for their own grant. Obviously, it is possible to enroll in the PhD program having ones own funds generated from some international or bilateral science support program.
